Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening is a surgical procedure carried out by our Specialist Periodontist, Dr Mahomed Issa. Crown lengthening is often referred to as a Gummy Smile.

What Is The Purpose of Crown Lengthening?

  • Occasionally there is not enough tooth visible above the gum margins to allow enough room to support a crown. Crown lengthening allows Dr Issa to remove some gum and bone tissue around the area to expose more of the natural tooth surface to be able to place a new crown.
  • Crown lengthening is also a cosmetic procedure for patients who show too much gum tissue around their teeth, a term often known as Gummy Smile. This procedure can be carried out on single teeth but in most cases several teeth along the upper arch.

What Is The Process of Crown Lengthening?

  • Your treatment plan will be discussed at your consultation with Dr Issa. The length of the appointment will depend on how many teeth are being treated and the amount of gum and bone around your teeth.
  • During your treatment, local anaesthetic is applied. Dr Issa will gently lift the gu to allow us to preserve the amount of tooth needed to give us the best results. A few small sutures wil be placed to keep the gum in this ideal position.
  • Healing may take up to 3 months to heal completely but we will provide you with an aftercare plan, specifically for your case.
