Specialist Care for Periodontal Treatment
Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is an inflammatory disease causing symptoms such as sore and inflamed gums, bone loss, bleeding gums, recession, mobile teeth or if severely advanced, tooth loss.
The early stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis, and this can be reversed with improvements in oral hygiene and cleaning. The first signs of gingivitis include bleeding and swollen gums. If gingivitis is not resolved, it may lead to periodontitis which causes damage to the bone and is irreversible and is likely to need professional help. Gum disease is often silent and may not cause any pain so if you notice any of these symptoms or you are worried, do not hesitate in seeking help before it is too late.
Gum disease is caused by a build up of plaque and bacteria, and if not removed can eat away at your bone. Other risk factors that can make you more susceptible include smoking, stress, and certain medical conditions.
Initial treatment starts with non-surgical therapy which involves deep cleaning under the gum allowing the gum to reattach onto the tooth, this can also be referred to as Root Surface Debridement. This is not a painful process and is generally carried out under local anaesthetic. In a large proportion of cases this improves the health of the gums, along with a strict oral health regime to be carried out at home.
